Whether you’re crafting together at a holiday party, on a winter crafternoon, or looking for something fun to do at home, turning gold straws into elegant straw star decor is an easy activity you can DIT (Do It Together). Think of them as a new twist on the paper snowflake. (And if you want that winter wonderland look, make them in white!) And once you’re done, there are so many ways to use them!

Plus, star decor couldn’t be simpler to make. All you need are four straws, scissors, a push pin and some gold wire!
Then you can get creative: vary the sizes of your stars, thread large and small stars together, and or bend the straws folding them outward, for a more 3-dimensional look like the cake topper above.
And don’t limit yourself to holiday decor! These stars also look great hanging from a nursery ceiling or decorating a celestial themed wedding or engagement party. And, of course, they’re just the thing for a cast party celebrating a cast full of stars!
You can also use different colored paper straws for specific occasions: hang them in school colors for a graduation party or make them to fit the color palette of a shower, wedding, or birthday party.

What You’ll Need:
- Four gold paper straws for each star
- Gold wire
- Scissors
- Gold buttons (optional)
- Monofilament for hanging (optional)
How-To
Step 1 Snip Vs into the ends of each straw to create points. If you’re making smaller stars, cut straws into three inch pieces, snipping Vs at both ends.
Step 2 Take two straws (or straw pieces) and form a cross with equal-length legs in every direction. Do the same with the remaining two straws or straw pieces. Layer the two crosses so that the middles overlap and the legs point out in different directions, not overlapping.
Step 3 Using a push pin or needle, poke two holes all the way through the stacked center of all four straws. Thread gold wire through one set of holes and out the other (as if you were sewing a button) and tie it together in back. If you want your stars to be extra decorative and secure, place a tiny gold or clear button on each side of the star’s center before threading the wire through and knotting to secure.
Step 4 If desired, you can attach stars to each other, so that the finished star has both long and short rays. You can bend the rays so they stick out in various directions for a more 3-D look, or keep them flat for more minimalist stars. Hang the finished stars from monofilament, scatter them across the table and work into decor. Now you’re ready to gaze at your stars!
