This Blue Moon Cocktail looks out of this world! The secret to this specialty drink—which might be the coolest to ever grace your bar—is a round ice cube (from an oversized ice cube tray) made out of butterfly pea flower tea. As it melts into the fizzy, lemony, gin-based drink, the tea and lemon juice mix together, turning the liquid purple.
It’s a cool, slightly spooky phenomenon perfect for Halloween parties. But the Blue Moon Cocktail would also be ideal for an engagement party celebrating a love so rare that it comes once in a blue moon or a birthday party for the person you think hung the moon. And there’s no need to wait for an actual blue moon—the second full moon to happen in one month—to serve it!
Not into gin? You can also mix this drink with vodka or any other clear liquid. Or, skip the booze, stick to the seltzer and make it a mocktail. You could also drop a blue moon into lemonade for an outer-space-themed kid’s birthday party. And if you’d prefer a pink or red moon, use hibiscus tea instead.
We poured our grown-up Blue Moon Cocktail in martini glasses for a flying saucer effect, but any clear glasses will work, too. However you serve it, this is one drink that’s an unearthly delight.
