Here’s fun, crafty baking activity that’s also a great way to have a ball on Halloween! Bake cake balls then frost and drizzle them with white chocolate and add with googly eyes, turning them into mummy cake balls for Halloween.
First, bake a cake—any flavor is fine, but blood-red velvet looks extra spooky when you bite into the mummy’s head! Then mash the cake into crumbs, mix with frosting, and roll into balls. Pour melted white chocolate over them, then drizzle them with more chocolate to create bandages. Have fun adding eyes to the mummies—you can make one-eyed cyclops mummies, eye-rolling mummies, or give one cake ball mummy a third eye.
Set them on the table as an eye-catching dessert that doubles as decor; we displayed ours on an instant cake stand we whipped up by turning over a bowl and resting a plate on top.
What You’ll Need
- Cake (box mix is fine)
- Wooden Spoon
- Frosting (store bought or homemade)
- White Candy Melts
- Lollipop Skewers
- Candy Eyeballs
How-To
Step 1 Bake an 8 inch cake! This can be any kind you like, boxed mix is fine. Then mash the baked cake into crumbs using your hands and/or a wooden spoon.
Step 2 Mix frosting into cake crumbs to create a paste that’s the consistency of play dough. We used store-bought frosting. Start with ½ cup; if crumbles are still too dry, add more one tablespoon at a time.
Step 3 Take a healing tablespoon of cake and roll it into a ball. Repeat until all cake is balled.
Step 4 Melt a ¼ cup worth of white candy melts according to package directions. Dip the end of a lollipop skewer into melted white chocolate and then stick into a cake ball. Freeze for twenty minutes to set skewers.
Step 5 Melt remaining candy melts according to package directions (either in microwave 30 second bursts or over a double boiler) Don’t overheat the chocolate or it becomes sticky. Take balls out of freezer and dip into the melted chocolate until they are coated. Press in different sized candy eyeballs while warm.
Step 6 Place balls in the refrigerator, let cool and harden. Don’t worry if they don’t look great! Most imperfections will be covered with bandages.
Step 7 Once the balls have hardened, melt another back of white candy melts and pour into a piping bag or ziploc bag with the point cut off (the smaller the hole, the skinnier the bandages). Squeeze melted chocolate onto cake balls, while using the lollipop stick to spin the ball around so that you’re “wrapping” the mummy head with bandages. Tip: If you’re going to serve the cake balls without the stick, don’t add extra chocolate around the bottom where the stick goes in—if you do and it hardens, it will make it harder to pull the sticks out.
Step 8 Let the balls cool in the fridge until hard. If you want to serve them on a plate, pull the sticks out. Or, keep the sticks in and arrange them in cups or stick the other ends into a cake or other soft surface.
